Maritime security training at the port of Berbera in Somalia

The work undertaken by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to support maritime security in Somalia continued with capacity-building activities held in the port of Berbera from 10 to 13 August 2024.

Participants from various institutions such as the Somaliland Maritime Security Coordination Office, Berbera Port Authority, Coast Guard, Police, Immigration and Customs discussed ways to enhance port security, taking into account the increasing threats to maritime security in the region.

Organised by IMO’s Maritime Security Section, the training focused on developing and updating a port facility security plan, including the assessment process and the need to adapt plans to address new and emerging security threats. Key messages included security as a driver for maritime development and the need for effective inter-agency cooperation.

The programme included lectures and discussions on the special measures to enhance maritime security in Chapter XI-2 of the IMO SOLAS Convention and the ISPS Code and related recommendations.
