Port of Lomé Welcomes MSC DILETTA, Its Largest Container Ship Ever

A memorable page has just been written in Togo’s maritime history: the MSC DILETTA, one of the world’s largest container ships, has successfully docked at the Port of Lomé.

Measuring an astounding 400 meters long and 61 meters wide—the equivalent of four football fields—this Liberian-flagged behemoth of the seas boasts an impressive capacity of 23,656 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

This historic call illustrates the Port of Lomé’s capability to host latest-generation vessels, meeting the most demanding international standards in maritime transport. Mr. Richard Gbalgueboa Kangbeni, the Minister of Maritime Economy and Coastal Protection, emphasized this achievement:

“Today, with the arrival of such large vessels, we are certain that the Port of Lomé’s performance will increase even further. This dynamic is not by chance but the result of the enlightened leadership of the Togolese Head of State, who has combined expertise and foresight, guiding our port towards the future of welcoming and processing the world’s largest ships. When one considers the requirements in terms of depth, security, and operational rates, it’s easy to understand that the Port of Lomé is definitively anchored in professionalism and the continuous improvement of its performance.”

The berthing of the MSC DILETTA is more than just a technical feat; it reinforces the strategy of the Togolese authorities. Through consistent investment in port infrastructure, they aim to position Lomé as an essential logistics hub in the sub-region.

Ranked among the top 100 container ports globally, the 5th largest container port in Africa, and holding the 1st position among container ports in West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa due to the quality and reliability of its services, the Port of Lomé possesses key competitive advantages:

  • Capacity to accommodate the world’s largest commercial vessels.
  • A modern container terminal with cutting-edge equipment.
  • Fluid operations thanks to efficient organization and 24/7 service.

The arrival of the MSC DILETTA also confirms the renewed confidence of shipowners and economic operators in the Port of Lomé, which is classified as the leading transshipment port in West Africa. It also reflects a clear ambition: to make Togo a true reference logistics and commercial platform in Africa.
