On 25 July 2026, Serge EKUE, President of the West African Development Bank (BOAD), paid a working visit to the General Directorate of the Port of Bissau to review the progress of the strategic Port of Bissau dredging project.
The visit was attended by Florentino Mendes PEREIRA, Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Mahamadou BONKOUNGOU, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the EBOMAF Group, as well as the Director General of the Guinea-Bissau Port Administration.
The discussions focused on assessing the implementation status of the Port of Bissau dredging project, which is co-financed by BOAD, and identifying the measures required to ensure the smooth continuation of the works under optimal technical and financial conditions. The project represents a major milestone in enhancing the operational performance of the country’s main seaport and meeting the growing demands of regional maritime trade.
Mr. Serge EKUE and Mr. Mahamadou BONKOUNGOU were also received in audience by the Prime Minister, who also serves as Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Finance. Their discussions centered on the progress of the dredging works and the ongoing wreck removal operations.
With a total pre-tax cost of CFAF 22.594 billion, the project is supported by a CFAF 15 billion financing package provided by BOAD.
Once completed, the project will significantly increase the Port of Bissau’s handling capacity, facilitate access for larger vessels, improve the country’s maritime connectivity, and strengthen trade flows, thereby enhancing Guinea-Bissau’s role in regional and international maritime commerce.
