On July 13, 2026, the Port of Toamasina reached a new milestone in its modernization process with the arrival of Madagascar’s first STS (Ship-to-Shore) cranes. Transported by the vessel ZHONG YU 188, these new facilities were delivered to the new C4 quay, where they will be used for container handling operations for vessels calling at the terminal.
These pieces of equipment represent a major step forward in the operational deployment of the C4 quay. STS cranes enable the transfer of containers between ships and the port terminal with greater precision and efficiency. They are particularly suited for operations involving large container vessels, improving the speed of cargo loading and unloading.
Strengthening port capacities
The commissioning of these cranes will contribute to increasing the operational capacity of the C4 quay. It will improve cargo handling rates, streamline port operations, and reduce vessel turnaround times.
For shipping lines, logistics operators, and port users, these new facilities will provide greater reliability, performance, and handling capacity. They will also enhance the competitiveness of the Port of Toamasina on regional and international maritime routes.
Toamasina, a strategic port for Madagascar
As Madagascar’s main port, Toamasina plays a vital role in the country’s trade activities. Its modernization supports the development of maritime commerce and contributes to the growth of the Malagasy economy.
With the integration of these new STS cranes, the Port of Toamasina reaffirms its ambition to become a more modern port platform, capable of meeting the requirements of international maritime transport and supporting the evolution of cargo flows in the region.
