The Kenya Ports Authority is committed to improving and modernizing the smaller ports in the Lake Victoria region

The Managing Director Captain William Ruto visited the feeder ports at Muhuru Bay and Sori Karungu Bay in Migori County to assess the current infrastructure.

During the tour , Captain Ruto announced about the Authority’s plans to launch a ferry service that will transport goods between Homa Bay pier and Sena Pier which is set to commence once the ferry construction is completed.

He also highlighted that the Homa Bay pier is close to completion and will feature a jetty, access roads, a ferry ramp, drainage systems, and walkways.

The Authority is aiming to tap into the potential of lake transportation, which could provide a significant boost to various commercial sectors, including fishing and cruise tourism.

Some of the feeder ports in the Nyanza region are Kendu Bay, Asembo Bay, Sena Pier on Mfangano Island, and Sio Port in Busia.

“Once these piers are finished, they will offer a safe and dependable way to transport both goods and passengers via ferries and water buses throughout Nyanza and the Western areas, as well as to neighbouring countries” he said.

During this assessment tour, the Managing Director was accompanied by Migori Deputy governor Dr. Joseph Mahiri, Eng. Mathews Amuti, General Manager Infrastructure Development, and other local officials..
