Thursday 5th September 2024, the GPA Communications Strategy Committee under the auspices of the PPP Concession Port Expansion Project, met with Councilors and management of the Brikama Area Council. The meeting was aimed at sharing relevant information relating to the deep seaport in Sanyang which is a key component of the Port Expansion Project with council which is the custodian of all administrative and development projects in the region.
In his address as chairperson of the Strategy Communications Committee, Mr. Sunkaru Jarju, gave an overview of the project, its objectives, and how it will impact staff as well as overall performance of the Port as the country’s main revenue generation establishment whose services impacts across all daily livelihoods of Gambians. He also explained what the entire project particularly the Sanyang seaport entails and how the project will impact the region’s development trajectory.
For their part, Councilors representing various wards in the region took turns to express their views on the project and raised concerns such as the environmental impact on the community of Sanyang, how the project will create jobs for young people in the region, particularly, the community of Sanyang, and whether council will gain any financial benefits in the form of royalties from the project. It is important to note that almost all Councilors who spoke at the meeting commended the GPA for the initiative to engage council on the implementation of this important project. And recommended that a similar meeting be held with the community of Sanyang. Their concerns were adequately addressed by committee members, notably, Legal Counsel Binta Samura, Matarr O. Sambou and Committee Chairperson Sunkaru Jarju, who assured them of GPA management’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the community of Sanyang and the region benefit from the project.
